Co2 Airsoft Rifles

What is the difference in BB guns and Airsoft guns?
I always grew up with those little BB guns in which u pump the rifle or whatever then it fires. Now i want another one, but now there are electrical BB guns, CO2 BB guns and all this other things, Would anyone take their time to explain these new things? What is the difference between 6mm bbs and paintball BBs? Can u use both types of ammo in the same gun?
i’ll just be informal and list out the things youll need to know. please bear with me. i thought it’d make everything simpler.
3 major types of BBs.
-.177 caliber
-6mm plastic
-.68caliber paintballs
.177 caliber are usually copper balls or aluminum flathead pellets, and usually they go in CO2 cartridge powered guns or pump action guns. they’re small, but they really really hurt, and pretty accurate up to about 100 feet.
6mm plastic is the most commonly used in terms of airsoft. most guns will fire 6mm platic. these vary in weight, starting with a .12g, .20g, .23g, .25g….. up to .45g i believe. the less weight more range but inaccurate, and more weight the more accurate yet less range. the most commonly used is a .20g.
.68caliber is the paintball round. nothing special. they explode on contact, but many times they just bounce off if it’s hit too far.
well, you can only fire a type of round that the gun is specifically built for. i mean, you can put smaller rounds into bigger rounded guns, for example, you can put a .177cal into a paintball, and it will fire, but it will probably fly about 5 feet and drop. but vise versa, you can’t put a bigger round into smaller barrel’d guns, they wouldn’t fit.
CO2 guns and other gas powered guns need a CO2 cartridge, green gas, or propane gas to operate. CO2 cartridges will go into the gun and are non-reusable. for green/propane gas guns, you just insert a small amount of gas into the gun. the bottle doesn’t actually go inside the gun. most CO2 cartridge guns fire .177, and green/propanes fire 6mm.
electric powered guns have a motor and a mechbox. when you pull a trigger it turns the motor. which then the motor will turn the gears inside the mechbox. then these internal gears will pull the piston back and release it, shooting a burst of air into the barrel. that;s why its called the “airsoft” gun. most AEGs fire 6mm.
a paintball is a whole different story. the paintballs magazine is on the top of the gun, and are mostly gravity fed. no springs or high cap round-up mags you see in airsoft guns. and there is a wire that connects the gun to a gas bottle. because this is powered by pressurized gas and there is always enough of it, paintballs tend to fire the furthest and hurt the most. (though i personally think a .177 cal rifle hurts more than paintball) the reason paintball is the most expensive out of three is because the gun itself is very expensive, the ammunition is expensive, the gas is ridiculously expensive, and other protective gears are expensive.
i hope this is enough. if you have further questions just edit it, and i’ll come back in a couple days and answer.
