Are mesh wire airsofting masks safe?
My friends and i just got a bunch of mesh airsoft maks from pointact.com, they dont fog and are comfortable. I read some reviews that they are not safe. So i shot at one with a cheap spring shotgun with crappy .12gs from like a foot away, and it didnt shatter but left dents. Is this safe?
There are two types of mesh mask.
Perforated steel masks have mesh that is a single plate with lots of holes punched in it. These are strong enough to withstand a point blank shot at 500fps (with 0.2g ammo). The holes are much too small for a BB to enter, even when distorted by denting.
Cheaper masks are made from a woven wire mesh. I make a point of never using these, I simply don’t trust them. A high powered shot can punch through them, and distortion caused by denting can conceivably leave a hole big enough for a round to enter.
Either way, a badly dented mesh mask should be replaced!
There can be an issue with low quality ammo (0.12g) shattering on impact (at point blank range) and sending fragments through (mostly with the woven mesh type as the holes are much bigger), but as people don’t tend to use 0.12g at skirmish sites it’s not really a problem.
